The piece opens with a waka-style verse: ‘四十路あまり 六とせ過ぎにし空蝉(うつせみ)の からの衣の やつれ捨てたり.’ It describes Saburōsuke as the shogunate’s foremost engineer and a noted military figure, and then begins to discuss his other side, referred to with the term ‘mokkei’ (wooden cock).
