Veteran High School Baseball Coach Eiichi Tsuruoka Retires After 45 Years

Eiichi Tsuruoka, 67, retired this summer after a 45-year coaching career that raised the profile of public high schools in Kanagawa. A resident of Shonandai, he began at Ooshimizu High School and became known for a relaxed motto of “detatoko shoubu” (play it by ear) combined with steady, practical training. Tsuruoka emphasized fundamentals, adaptability, and teamwork, producing competitive teams from public schools and mentoring many players and assistant coaches. His departure marks the end of an era for the local baseball community, which credits him with sustaining public-school presence in regional tournaments.
