Small Step Toward Restoring Algae Beds: First Successful Seed Harvest of Zostera marina

Miura City and the Sanwa Fishing Cooperative reported on September 3 that they achieved their first successful harvest of seeds from the seagrass Amamo (Zostera marina) as part of efforts to restore seaweed beds around Jōgashima. The work responds to widespread loss of algae along the Sagami Bay coast, attributed in recent years to warming and other factors, which has harmed coastal ecosystems and fisheries. The seed harvest is an early but important step in the partners’ longer-term plan to reestablish Amamo meadows and help recover the coastal marine environment.
