Kamakura's Special Feature No. 201: The Five Nun Temples of Kamakura (Part 2)

As the nun-ranked temple system in Kamakura and Kyoto fell into disuse and decline, many head priest positions came to be held by men rather than nuns. The sole surviving example of the nun-temple system in Kamakura is Tokeiji, ranked second among the nun temples. Tokeiji was founded by the nun Kakuzan-ni, wife of the eighth regent Hōjō Tokimune, and its patron was her son Sadatoki.
