Lecture Examines Pre-Perry Arrival Era Through Dutch Interpreter Tateishi’s Diary

A civic group called ‘Miura Hantō no Bunka o Kangaeru Kai’ will host a lecture on September 5 about the period surrounding Commodore Perry’s arrival, using diary entries by Dutch interpreter Tateishi Tokujirō, who served as a negotiator during Perry’s visit. The speaker will explore the contemporary social and political conditions revealed in Tateishi’s writings. The event is intended to shed local light on the historical context of foreign contact in the area.
