Mako Irie, 33, a former competitive tennis player from Isshiki, Hayama, has risen to No. 1 in the women’s Japan rankings in beach tennis. She attributes her success to embracing her past weaknesses and using the lessons of tough training and obstacles to fuel her play. Irie says she approaches the sport with a mindset of enjoying challenges while continuing to push her limits on the sand.
